Session breakouts on gold, explained
Gold (XAUUSD) often trades in a tight range during the quiet Asian hours, then moves sharply when London opens. A session-breakout strategy is built to catch that first strong move.
Why the London open matters
London is the largest forex trading centre. When it opens, liquidity and volume jump, and price often breaks out of the range it built overnight. Gold is especially sensitive because it is priced in US dollars and reacts to rates, risk sentiment and data.
London opens at 08:00 London time — that is 13:30 IST in winter and 12:30 IST in summer.
How a straddle works
A straddle places two pending orders around the range:
- a buy stop a little above the range high, and
- a sell stop a little below the range low.
Whichever side breaks first is triggered, and the other order is cancelled. A stop loss and take-profit are attached at entry, so risk is known before the trade starts.
What can go wrong
- False breakouts. Price pokes out, triggers the order, then reverses. Good filters and sensible stops limit the damage.
- News spikes. Major US data can move gold several dollars in seconds. Many traders pause the EA around those releases.
- Spread. Spreads widen at session opens. A broker with tight gold spreads and a VPS near its servers helps.
